ZUS payments are obligatory for most people working in Poland.
Because of this the ZUS has at least a certain amount of money
to pay health expenses, pension and unemployment (not shure if
they do this as well).
Without ZUS the state would have to introduce a higher tax (in fact
ZUS is more or less a tax) or leave the health, pension, unemployment
founding to the people themself, which would not work out for a
lot because of their low income.
I don't know how the ZUS was startet, which starting budget they had
and about the deeper connections to the NFZ (national health found),
please someone more educated help me out here.

Martin

Hi Martin, thanks.

I have been working in Poland for almost 3 years now and I don't pay ZUS, nobody has told me to and nobody has asked why I don't ( I have to apply for a residence permit every year ) How much is it supposed to cost you per month or should I rather just make do without it and have my own retirement/health plan?

If you can legally avoid paying it, don't pay. I don't know what all the legal 'ins and outs' are. I do know, from a conversation I had with a lawyer, that if you do have to pay and don't, you could be in a lot of trouble. Probably best to get an answer from someone who really knows the score.

Hi, I would check this, just because nobody asked you to pay
doesn't mean you don't have to pay. For example as an selfemployed
you'll have to pay around 700PLN/month.
For my work-situation (employed in a polish company and selfemployed)
I found no legal way not to pay ZUS.

Martin
P.s. If you need some professional advice I can email you an address. Please PM me in this case.

To you, the benefits are close to bugger all.

It's important because it provides cash to many of the 55% of Poles who can't be arsed to do any work. The benefits are for them and for the administrators of ZUS.

Agreed. One other thing though, it helps keep the unemployment figures down by employing an army of otherwise unemployable people.
