(2009-07-10) La novoj Bjalistoko ci semanjo as en Esperanto. Bialystok is preparing itself for the arrival of Esperanto specialists from around the world celebrating 150 years since the birth of its inventor. The city was home to Ludwik Zamenhof, inventor of the language, with which he hoped to bring down barriers between people. Among a range of tourist attractions, an Esperanto trail has been set up around the city, taking in Zamenhof’s birthplace and school. The PAP news agency further reports that local buses will have Esperanto lessons placed in the slots normally reserved for advertising and local artists have come together to record a CD of songs in Esperanto, including a band called Empty singing a song titled ‘Humiligu min’ or ‘Humiliate me’. Meanwhile, the anniversary congress of Esperanto speakers will take place from July 25 to August 1. The British Esperanto Youth organisation, though, should take care in displaying their organisation’s initials, JEB, during the gathering, as this is a rather offensive word in Polish.Readers Comments
Strange songs some people sing! I too would have been attending this Congress but for the current financial crisis. If I had been there, as one who grew up in the sixties, I'd be singing the Esperanto translation of "If I Had a Hammer", ending with the words "...kanto pri amo inter ĉiuj homfratoj tra tuta la mond'" (A song about love between the brothers and the sisters all over this WORLD" - couldn't do any harm, could it?) I think Bill Chapman underestimates the number of Esperanto speakers, worldwide. It is regretable, however, that only a few people know that it has become a living language. During a short period of 121 years Esperanto is now in the top 100 languages, out of 6,800 worldwide, according to the CIA factbook. It is the 17th most used language in Wikipedia, and in use by Skype, Firefox and Facebook. Native Esperanto speakers,(people who have used the language from birth), include George Soros, World Chess Champion Susan Polger, Ulrich Brandenberg the new German Ambassador to NATO and Nobel Laureate Daniel Bovet.
