Buzek close to EP finish line as Mauro drops out

Former Polish prime minister Jerzy Buzek looks set to take up the reigns of the European Parliament (EP) following the Italian candidate for the post of president, Mario Mauro, deciding to drop out of the running.

On Sunday, Mauro officially stepped out of the race leaving the path pretty much clear for Buzek.

“I never thought this competition was an Italy vs. Poland football match, as some have presented it. What mattered here was choosing the right person, not the right country. It's strange that heads of government got involved in the whole thing. This isn't a matter for governments,” Mauro told Gazeta Wyborcza.
