President calls for Uprising Remembrance Day

President Lech Kaczynski has proposed that August 1st be made a National Day of Remembrance for the Warsaw Uprising.
During a meeting with participants of the UprIsing, the President said that he had already sent a draft bill on the issue to parliament and is confident that it will be passed.
“My initiative is connected with the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw Rising and I cannot imagine it would be rejected," he said.
According to a poll conducted by Rzeczpospolita, 72 percent of the pubic were in favour of the bill, although the plans have drawn mixed responses from politicians who remain divided on the issue.
