Councillors in the city of Slupsk, on the Baltic coast, introduced a ban on children walking dogs, the newspaper Fakt reports this week, with fines of several hundred zloty imposed on teenagers who break the by-law. The contentious law states that pets in public areas must be under the control of an adult capable of controlling its behaviour.

Local residents are outraged, 14-year-old Iga Zukowska clutching her Yorkshire Terrier, telling reporters, “My little dog can’t hurt anyone.
