Winter attacked unexpectedly this Wednesday, combined with high winds and storms on the coast, wreaking havoc around the country, leaving many in dire straits and killing several. Worst hit was the East of the country all the way from Gdansk down to Zakopane. Fire officers answered around 8,000 emergency calls, almost 500,000 households were without power, Elblag suffered severe flooding and the pier in Sopot was closed after being battered by high winds and waves. Several people died of hypothermia, some of them yards from their homes, one man was crushed to death by a falling branch and elsewhere a seven-year-old ended up in hospital after a similar accident.
