Poland’s problem of teenage pregnancy was pushed into the spotlight again last week after a newborn baby was found dumped in a school rubbish bin after being abandoned by his 14-year-old mother.The shocking case, with nobody at the school in the town of Przelewice apparently aware that the schoolgirl was pregnant, came as a sad reminder to Poland that despite its reputation as a country where conservative and Catholic customs still hold sway, teenagers have sex and get pregnant.
Official figures record that as many as 20,000 teenage girls gave birth last year with as many as 1,500 babies born to mothers aged between 15 and 16, and 84 born to girls aged 14.
