Baltic pipeline gets green light

The undersea gas pipeline designed to connect Russian providers to German customers has received a green light from Scandinavian countries that had been holding back approval mainly due to fears about its environmental impact.

This removes the last major hurdle to the project.

Sweden and Finland both consented last week to the Nord Stream pipeline, which will run through their territorial waters. Denmark gave its OK to the project last month. It is unclear what promises the countries received in exchange, but Finland had been seeking access to cheap Russian lumber.
