Poland beefs up security

Poland took a further step aimed at bringing Ukraine closer to the Western fold, and beefing up its own security in the east by announcing plans to form a joint military brigade with its large Eastern neighbour and Lithuania.

Defence ministers from the three countries said they would sign an accord on the “strategic partnership” at a meeting later this month.

“This reflects our support for Ukraine. We want to tie Ukraine closer to Western structures, including military ones,” Stanislaw Komorowski, Poland’s deputy defence minister, told reporters.

“This is also proof that Ukraine is taking seriously its desire for closer cooperation with members of the EU and NATO,” he add ...
