Polish jails ready to burst

Over 80,000 convicts in Poland are roaming free instead of serving their term, mainly because prisons are overcrowded.


Despite being able to hold 83,000 prisoners, Polish jails are already struggling to accommodate 85,000.

The situation is set to worsen in December when new EU regulations will guarantee each inmate three square metres of space.

In order to avoid overloading cells, the Justice Ministry has introduced alterations to the penal code, making it possible for courts to postpone prison sentences if there is no room and European standards cannot be met.   ...
