Tusk tries to muscle through changes to the way the president is elected
Poland’s prime minister announced plans to change the constitution by scrapping the general election for president in what has been seen by many as attempt to curb the powers of his arch rival, President Lech Kaczynski.Airing his unusual proposals, which he described as “limited, not revolutionary”, at a press conference, Donald Tusk said he favoured replacing the popular vote for president with an election within the legislature.
“The next president of the republic could be elected along new lines by parliament,” Mr Tusk told reporters, adding that he would also like to see an end to the presidential veto over legislation.
