Poland balks at EU health directive

Poland has opposed an EU health directive for fear it will lead to a mass exodus of patients.The “Patients without Borders” proposal, which could become EU law as of December, would allow Poles the right to treatment in other EU countries, where they could get a better level of service.
But with part of the total costs having to be covered by Poland’s National Health Fund (NFZ), the cost could run into millions.
At the moment, if a Pole wants to be treated free of charge abroad, the patient needs to get permission from the president of the NFZ.
