Ebi Smolarek, one time darling of Polish football, has hit back over claims excessive financial demands have been the source of his continued absence from the game.

Smolarek has gone from hero to zero in a matter of seasons, and suffered the ignominy of having his contract terminated by Racing Santander last season. He had been widely expected to make a return signing for HSV Hamburg, though that move has now been cancelled. ‘If anyone says that I did not sign a contract with HSV because I wanted too much, is lying, I just wanted to play in the Europa League’.
