Germany has pledged EUR 60 mln to the maintenance and upkeep of the Auschwitz death camp museum.

The announcement was made earlier this week by Chancellor Angela Merkel and comes after 10 months of discussions involving German officials and the Auschwitz foundation.

Until now, the notorious Nazi death camp has relied solely on funds from Poland’s national state budget and additional revenue raised through the museums, with approximately only five percent of funds coming from foreign aid.

In addition to the one off bulk payment, an annual sum, believed to be somewhere in the region of EUR 4-5 mln, will be injected into the site by Germany to help with any renovations and expansions.
