Snow and freezing temperatures have descended on Poland this week leading to predictable scenes of traffic chaos and creating serious difficulties for many. The north-west of the country has been the least affected, with low, but not unusual, temperatures of -5 degrees or so and a light dusting of snow.

Across a broad band of the country from Gdansk down through the capital and on to Krakow temperatures have been much lower, down to around -15, and anything from 5-10cm of snow has fallen. Worst hit is the south-east of the country, around Rzeszow, where temperatures have fallen below -15 degrees with windchill making it feel more like -25, and significant snowfall of 15cm or more.
