Church to regain property

The Catholic Church looks set to regain property seized by the communist regime by the end of the year.

Despite being given compensation in 1950 from the so-called ‘Church Fund’, a commission found in 1991 that the state must give up land nationalized in 1950 under 50 sq hectares.

The church hopes the move will finally put an end to the long-running legal battles.

“The Church wants to close property claim cases as soon as possible because it harms its image. A growing number of people think that the Church is growing rich illegally and perceive the case as scandalous,” says Krzysztof Wasowski from the Church-governmental property committee.
