Gambling business bigger than vodka Poles spent twice as much on gambling as on vodka in 2009, according to a report in Puls Biznesu.

A record PLN 20 bln was spent last year at casinos and on lottery tickets, slot machines, and bets with bookmakers.

The highest rate of growth was seen in slot machines, which grew in number by a third to some 56,000. Higher taxes introduced last year, when an anti-gambling law passed, have already halved the number of "one-armed bandits" and will likely put a crimp in the industry's growth rate.
