A record PLN 20 bln was spent last year at casinos and on lottery tickets, slot machines, and bets with bookmakers. The highest rate of growth was seen in slot machines, which grew in number by a third to some 56,000. Higher taxes introduced last year, when an anti-gambling law passed, have already halved the number of "one-armed bandits" and will likely put a crimp in the industry's growth rate.
