Animal rights campaigners are up in arms over a canine shelter in the eastern city of Lukow, claiming that over 140 dogs have disappeared without record.

Some activists have gone as far as to claim that the home, run by Urszula Konstantais, is nothing more than a ‘death factory’ in which dogs are slaughtered for money.

Many have criticised the poor conditions in which the animals are forced to live in, with a large number kept in small, cold kennels, with insufficient food.

The shelter is one of the poorest in the area, with authorities providing as little as PLN 200 a month per dog, compared to similar shelters in the region, some of which receive over double that.
