The term ‘seadog’ took on a literal meaning this week when a dog was rescued, drifting on pack ice 15 miles out in the bay of Gdansk, having started its journey four days before, 80 miles inland. The dog was first spotted on the Wisla at Grudziadz last Saturday, stranded in the ice floe, but local fire officers were unable to reach it. It was finally spotted again on Tuesday by the weather ship Baltica, whose crew initially thought they had spotted a sealion.At great risk, the crew lowered a dinghy into the ice pack and succeeded in rescuing the hungry, frightened animal who, despite his ordeal had suffered no real harm.
