A man has received an apology from the authorities for being wrongly sent to jail for 15 days - instead of his brother.

In 2007, Andrzej Malinowski was sent down for stealing PLN 16 worth of food from a Biedronka supermarket in Torun, while his brother was free to walk the streets.

The real thief failed to show any ID at the time of arrest, but police accepted the false details he gave, as they were so convincing.

“During those 15 days, we had our world turned upside down,” says Bernadette Malinowski, Andrzej’s wife. ...
