Podolski shared the grief with his nation
Following the tragedy at Smolensk, all Polish sporting events were cancelled as a mark of respect for the President and all the other passengers on board, in particular Piotr Nurowski, Chair of the Polish Olympic Committee.
“The death of Piotr Nurowski is a terrible loss for the Polish and worldwide Olympic movement. I met him when I was still competing, while he was Chair of the Polish Athletics Association. He had so many plans…,” commented the former Olympic hurdles champion Irena Szewinska. Nurowski had been the youngest ever head of a national athletics association when he led the organisation in the 1980s at the age of only twenty-eight.
