The number of people choosing to enter the priesthood is failing.

According to a report by the Conference of the Polish Episcopate, 687 men enrolled at seminaries last year - seven less than in 2008.

But the bigger picture shows a more drastic drop, with the number of candidates falling by almost 30 percent in the past decade.

“The beginning of the 21st century – the last years of Pope John Paul II – was a sort of religious retreat and encouraged many young people to enter the seminary,” says national priest for vocations, Father Marek Dziewiecki.

Young men enter the priesthood because they desire to devote all their energy to Christ. Being human, would-be candidates for the priesthood may be put off by the anti-religious and irreligious attitudes present in their environment. These attitudes are more prevalent or more obvious now than in the recent past, which partly explains the decline in religious vocations. It follows that those that do start or continue their seminary studies these days do so in spite of the difficulties I mentioned; and therefore these are the ones that are more determined and more spiritually imbued. The Church's immediate future lies in quality rather than in quantity.
