Poland’s exports powered away in first four months of the year propelled by the weak state of the zloty.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office (GUS) for January to April showed that exports increased by 15.4 percent, year-on-year, to EUR 35.3 bln. At the same time imports rose by 14.7 percent to EUR 38.7 bln.

The surge in exports comes on the back of the declining health of the zloty. The Polish currency, for long one of Europe’s more resilient coinages, has slumped in recent months as international investors pull out of what they perceive to be areas of risk.

This has brought the zloty down but at the same time increased the competitiveness of Poland’s exporters.
