Bronislaw Komorowski and Jaroslaw Kaczynski will go head to head in a run-off vote to become the next president of Poland after coming first and second in the election’s first round.

The two men left the eight other first round candidates trailing in their wake, with Mr Komorowski scooping 41.22 percent while his main rival garnered 36.74 percent. Gregorz Napieralski, the candidate of the left wing Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), came in a distant third with 14 per cent of the vote.

Mr. Komorowski of the ruling Civic Platform (PO) polled 6,981,318, with Kaczynski’s Law and Justice (PiS) party drawing in a total of 6,128,255 votes. This left a surprisingly large 2.3 million showing ...
