A Krakow court this week remanded Anders Hoegstroem in custody until September 9 this year, while investigations into the theft of the infamous ‘Arbeit macht frei’ sign from the entrance to Auschwitz concentration camp continues. Lawyers representing the Swede pointed out that their client has been very cooperative and should therefore be released. But judges concurred with prosecutors that there was too high a risk of Hoegstrom fleeing the country.

Prosecutors have also applied to their Swedish counterparts to interrogate three further witnesses, rumoured to include the millionaire Lars W., who is suspected of being the instigator of the theft.
