New President Bronislaw Komorowski and First Lady Anna Komorowska accept the cheers of supporters
Poland came under the dominance of the pro-business Civic Platform party after its candidate Bronislaw Komorowski beat Jaroslaw Kaczynski by 53 percent to 47 percent in the country’s presidential elections.
Mr Komorowski chalked up over 1,000,000 more votes than the Law and Justice leader, and his only rival, in the second round, making him the clear winner by six points.
Although the president elect later dropped his links with Civic Platform in order that “this presidency be one of national unity”, his win means that party, the dominant force in the two-party coalition government, now has all the reins of power.
