“Kaczynski or Komorowski? Neither – Pearl Jam,”
Last Sunday’s Polish presidential elections passed off with few problems, and the electoral infrastructure survived both the recent floods and the difficulties associated with the timing of the poll, which meant thousands of Poles were on holiday, and so away from their home constituencies.Steps were taken to ensure voting rights for the disabled – with as many as 7,000 polling stations specially adapted for their needs. Voting also took place in 731 hospitals, 441 old people’s homes and 189 prisons or remand centres. Democracy doesn’t come cheaply, though, with the cost of the elections estimated at a whopping PLN 121.5 mln, or 4 zloty per vote.
