The number of Poles living below the poverty line is on the increase, says a new report.

The data, supplied by the Central Statistics Office (GUS), suggests that around 2.2 million are living in poverty, the main reason being a lack of employment opportunities in the agricultural sector.

“If we are saying that the economy is doing well yet the number of people living in poverty is rising, there is clearly a problem in our country’s social politics and the state is starting to cut costs on social spending,” says Father Marian Subocz, Director of the Catholic charity organization Caritas Polska.
