Poland agrees nuclear future17th July 2010
The declaration, which was signed by both Hanna Trojanowska, Poland’s nuclear power commissioner, and Francisco Sanchez, U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce and International Trade, makes clear the two nation’s plans to work towards building a safe, effective and environmentally sound nuclear infrastructure. The deal also aims to encourage fair and open tender procedures within the sector as well as aiming to increase the development of human resources. “The Development of nuclear energy will be an important component of Poland’s energy balance,” said deputy PM and Finance Minister Waldemar Pawlak. “We have a preliminary list of locations and the right infrastructure in place to develop a legal framework for this enormous investment.” Polish officials are aiming to draw up a draft of legislation by the end of this year, which is essential in order to construct a stable framework. During this period, a series of training programmes are to be developed and put into place under the name of the National Atomic Energy Agency. It is believed that the location for Poland’s newly proposed power plant will be put forward between 2011-2014, by which time both finances, and reactor technology plans, should be in order. According to Lee A. Feinstein, U.S. Ambassador to Poland, the agreement signifies the beginning of a great cooperation between the two nations. “Secretary Sanchez’s visit is a clear signal of the importance the States is placing on the growing energy partnership between Washington and Warsaw.” Readers CommentsComments are now closed for this article
