Warsaw City Hall received a cool PLN 375 mln this Wednesday in EU funds towards the construction of the city’s North Bridge. “This is the largest subsidy for a road project in the history of Warsaw,” exclaimed a delighted President Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz. The subsidy is also, by a curious coincidence, the 375th subsidising agreement reached by the city with the EU. Officials calculated that were it not for the EU funding, the bridge would cost PLN 2,300 from every citizen.

Michal Olszewski, head of the city’s office of European funding explained that Warsaw could have applied for even more money for the North Bridge. The EU funds are covering 38% of the costs, whereas other projects ...
