"Unexpected delights" in Barcelona
The Polish athletics squad returned from the European Championships in Barcelona this week to a rather muted heroes’ welcome, despite winning their second ever highest medal total, winning two gold, two silver and five bronze medals.
Piotr Malachowski, who took gold in the discus told reporters, “I’m absolutely delighted, not only with the gold but that I beat Robert Harting.” Asked if it was true he didn’t shake the German thrower’s hand after the competition, Malachowski pointed out, “He didn’t shake my hand – it’s usually up to the loser to congratulate the winner.”
