Poland is leading the appeal for change
Poland is leading the way to get the European Commission (EC) to consider changing its accounting rules in the way public debt is calculated, in order to account for changes in the state pension systems.
The appeal was made through a letter dated August 6 and addressed to the EC and European Union (EU) President Herman van Rompuy by Poland and eight other eastern EU states including Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, Sweden, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic.
These nine states have requested the bloc to consider reviewing how to treat costs related to pension reforms, which according to them are inflating their budget shortfalls.
