Work has begun on the monument commemorating those who lost their lives in the Smolensk air disaster on April 10.

The obelisk, located in the Warsaw Military Cemetery, is the brainchild of Marek Moderau who was selected via a competition set up by Warsaw’s Office of Architecture and City Planning.

Moderau explained the reasoning behind choosing to split the monument into two separate parts; “I wanted to break the monolithic block, i.e. the single structure. It is unexpected and the names of the victims are represented in the middle.” ...
