Franciszek Smuda needs to prove himself against Ukraine
Following the recent chastening experiences against Spain and Cameroon, this weekend’s international friendly fixtures will provide a clearer picture of where the national team stands. Two more defeats to nil and national team coach Franciszek Smuda might as well give up and go home. More promising displays and a goal or two, and the glass may look half-full, rather than drained to the dregs.
Poland will first face Ukraine in Lodz on Saturday afternoon, with their neighbours still heavily reliant on fading stars such as Andrei Shevchenko. Like Poland, they failed to qualify for South Africa and are of course co-hosts with Poland of Euro 2012.
