Sopot’s President Jacek Karnowski was centre of attention this week regarding his standing for re-election and the ongoing corruption charges he faces. First came a decision by Gdansk Regional Court to return charge files to prosecutors. The full decision, due next week, will outline exactly what the court requires prosecutors to do to complete the paperwork and allow the trial to proceed. If the directions are considered not feasible, prosecutors may abandon the case altogether.

The main arguments surround the incriminating tape recordings made by Karnowski’s main accuser, Slawomir Julke. The recordings were made on a dictaphone and the original recordings have been destroyed. Karnowski� ...
