Time will tell if Smuda sticks to his principals
Franciszek Smuda will soon be left without anyone to pick for the national squad if he sticks to his hard line on player discipline, following revelations that large numbers of leading players ignored his no drinking rule and organised parties in and around their hotels during the last two friendlies. First for the chop were Maciej Iwanski and Slawomir Peszko, who were told they would never be called up again following tabloid tales of night-time drinking. Now it has emerged that other players were up till late in the Andel’s Hotel in Lodz, sitting in a lobby with a group of females and a table dripping with alcohol.
