Thirteen Polish holidaymakers were killed and 18 seriously injured after a coach crashed on a German motorway south of Berlin.

The coach, which was travelling from the western town of Zloncieniec to Spain, slammed into pillars supporting a bridge after an initial collision with a Mercedes Benz had made the driver lose control. It was the deadliest road accident this year in Germany.

“Our bus was going straight on the highway and then from around a curve a red car suddenly appeared,” tour organizer Ewa Kramek told the news channel TVN24 in an interview from her hospital room where she was treated for a broken elbow. “Our driver was trying to avoid it, to escape to the left side.
