Abortion in Poland is to be brought back into the political and social limelight following the announcement by the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) that it will table legislation aimed at liberalising the country’s abortion laws.Grezgorz Napieralski, the SLD leader, said the party hoped to bring the bill to parliament in October, in a move bound to reignite debate in Poland over the practice, and the effectiveness of the current laws regulating abortion.
Under the left-wing party’s proposal, a foetus could be removed up until the tenth week of pregnancy if the mother desired it.
