A reported 39 people were killed on the roads whilst visiting graves
Police reported that 39 people were killed and 532 injured on the country’s roads over the All Saints’ Day holiday weekend at the start of November.
The deaths and injuries came despite a massive police operation intended to limit the body count on what is traditionally one of the bloodiest few days on Poland’s highways and byways as hundreds of thousands of people take to the roads to visit family and the graves of loved ones.
Codenamed “Operation Torch” police forces across the country deployed some 15,000 officers on traffic duty to deter speeding and round up drunk drivers - a particular problem owing to people drinking alcohol with family members.
