O’ Brown's role in the Warsaw Uprising has only now come to light
The story of a Nigerian-born musician who fought in the Warsaw Uprising has been documented in the new book ‘An African in Warsaw’.
The life of August Agbola O’ Brown, a jazz musician plying his trade in the Polish capital, seemed to have been consigned to urban myth until it was picked up on by Dr. Zbigniew Osinski of the Warsaw Uprising Museum.
“The story is a very interesting one,” says Dr. Osinski in Gazeta Wyborcza. “Whilst preparing a biographical account of the participants in the Uprising, we came across August O’ Brown’s files and it certainly appears that he took part. It seems amazing he was able to fight in secrecy because of the colour of his skin.”
