Doctors can earn up to PLN 4,000 for illegal abortions
A new study focusing on abortions has raised questions over the country’s current laws.
The report, carried out by the Ministry of Health, stated that a total of 538 legal abortions were performed in Poland during 2009 due to concerns over health grounds. But the exact number of illegal abortions is not known and is estimated to be as high as 100,000.
At present, abortion is illegal in Poland but the law has done little to stop the act. Instead, the practice has been pushed underground and turned into a huge money-making mafia-driven business, with clinics making between PLN 2,000 - 4,000 each time.
