Polish plans to re-enforce ties with European superpowers France and Germany got off to an embarrassing start owing to a number of gaffs that have left diplomats red faced.

Officials neglected to shield President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel from the Warsaw rain leaving only Bronislaw Komorowski, the Polish president, with the satisfaction of an umbrella.

An agency photograph of the slightly bedraggled German and French leaders standing in the rain alongside the sheltered Polish president received wide attention in the international press.
