Much controversy surrounds the church's attempt to reclaim its land
A controversial committee charged with returning Church property swiped by the communist government has wound up its work amid a swirl of allegations that it handed over valuable state assets for little more than a song.
Since it was set up in 1990 the Property Commission has approved 1,486 claims and returned 537 hectares of land worth PLN 143 mln to the Catholic Church.
While few in Poland argue that the Church deserved some recompense for its persecution during the dark days of the one-party state, the commission acted under a cloud of scandal and controversy.
