Kolobrzeg will see the biggest mine clear up in 50 years
The beaches along Poland’s coastal resort of Kolobrzeg are set to witness a large-scale mine-clearing operation in the coming weeks.
Experts predict that there are still hundreds of active shells, mines and grenades buried deep in the sand and surrounding beach areas from the Second World War that need to be removed.
Authorities have called for the clear up, expected to be the largest of its kind in the last 50 years, after a number of unexploded bombs were uncovered last autumn. Some of the recovered shells were reportedly no more than 30 centimetres below the surface.
