In a mind-boggling move, the Polish FA (PZPN) is set to get rid of the six, full-time professional referees they currently have and, as of next season, all Polish officials will return to being amateurs. The shock move is a result of stringent cost-cutting measures at the PZPN and disillusionment among Ekstraklasa clubs with what they see as substandard refereeing.

The six full-timers are coming in for criticism that they are untouchable and cannot be demoted for poor handling of matches. As Janusz Eksztajn, the PZPN’s Head of Refereeing explained to Przeglad Sportowy, “Even if they make mistakes, I have to use them. The six professional refs must run 24 matches per season.
