Cemeteries and churches are sites that are being stripped of cultural items
Poland is being stripped of its cultural heritage by thieves and citizens unaware they are breaking the law, a national institute has warned.
A report by the Institute of National Heritage said that almost every day a piece of the country’s culture is stripped from a church or cemetery, or stolen from a museum or gallery, and the scale of the problem goes unrecognised.
“Thefts from museum exhibitions and from collections can hit the headlines but a lot of the time crimes against cultural heritage get little recognition,” it said in a statement designed to raise public awareness of the problem.
