The European Court of Justice has ruled against Lithuanians being allowed to change their names on official documents after marrying Poles.

The ruling, which the court has stated does not in any way violate EU laws, means that Lithuanians will be forced to keep the original version of their surname, despite being engaged in wedlock.

According to news site TVN24, the decision was made after Luxembourg examined the case of Pole Pawel Wardyna and his Lithuanian wife Malgozate Runevic-Vardyn whose wish to change part of her surname to ‘Runiewicz’ was denied by a court in the capital of Vilnius.
