Prisons are overflowing according to new findings

A new investigation states that Poland has been hiding information regarding the overcrowding of its prisons.

According to reports in daily Gazeta Wyborcza, the problem has reached serious proportions, yet the Prison Service appears to be doing little to combat it, or even acknowledge its existence.

In order to highlight the alleged problems, Professor Irena Lipowicz from the Polish Ombudsman (RPO) drafted a letter to Prison Service General Jacek Wlodarski asking for clarification on several issues.

In the letter, published on the RPO website, Prof Lipowicz reviews a number of prison regulations.

She states that according to the Penal Code, prisoners are not to be detained in transit ...
