Poland assumed the presidency of the European Union with frequent renditions of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and a determined desire to use its time in the limelight to put the country on the map and exert influence.

This is the first time Poland has taken control of the rotating presidency, picking up the baton from fellow Central European Hungary, and it will hold the position till the end of the year.

Speaking to parliament, PM Donald Tusk said that the country assumes the presidency as one of the rising stars of the European Union, and a country much changed from the economic basket case it once was during the communist years.
