Poland unveiled the initial design for its new national stadium this week, to be built on the ruins of the “Russian market” Stadion Dziesięciolecia on the eastern bank of the Wisła. The decision on the design, which provides for a huge exterior of red and white tiles, a retractable roof and state of the art facilities inside, is the government’s response to criticism of Poland’s slow progress in preparing for the Euro 2012 football championships. It is also the first in a wave of huge infrastructure projects set to be announced in months to come.
